Title: Water Quality Physical Parameters Data (Lietz)
Online_Linkage: <http://sofia.usgs.gov/exchange/lietz/lietzphy.html>
Description:
Abstract:
The data set contains values for water temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, sample location cross section, and sampling depth at 5 sites.

The sites are: Biscayne Canal at S-28 Little River Canal at S-27 Miami Canal at S-26 Snapper Creek Canal at S-22 Tamiami Canal at S-25B

Purpose:
A vital component in ecosystem restoration is the understanding of prerestoration water quality. The health of Biscayne Bay has been threatened by nutrient-laden discharges from the east coast canal system resulting from urbanization and agricultural activities. Extensive changes to the current water management system in order to restore natural historic hydropatterns to the Everglades potentially may affect the Biscayne Bay ecosystem. This study was developed in order to provide a method of estimating nutrient loads from east coast canals to the Bay and to provide an understanding of nutrient distribution and concentration in the east coast canal system. Models for estimation of nutrient loads were developed using the techniques of linear regression analysis. In order to understand current and historical water-quality in southern Florida, long-term trends from two surface water sites potentially affected by restoration efforts, Miami Canal at S-26 and Tamiami Canal - Forty Mile Bend to Monroe, were investigated. This task determined the water quality physical parameters for canals discharging into Biscayne Bay National Park

Process_Description:
Water-quality samples were collected upstream of discharge points of coastal canals in eastern Dade County during various seasons and flow conditions. Procedures were applied to determine if any statistical differences existed between depth-integrated and grab samples. Depth-integrated samples were collected by the equal-width-increment method. This method consists of raising and lowering a sampler through-out several verticals in the stream at a constant rate so that the bottle is not overfilled when returned to the surface and then compositing the water samples in a churn splitter. To establish the number of verticals that needed to be sampled and to determine horizontal and vertical variability within the water column, water-quality cross-sectional surveys were made of temperature, specific conductance, pH, and dissolved oxygen. Grab samples, obtained concurrently with the depth-integrated samples, were collected at 0.5 and 1.0 meter below the surface near the centroid of flow. Additionally, the upstream and downstream stages and gate openings were recorded during each sampling event in order to compute the instantaneous discharge from the appropriate rating. These ratings were developed using acoustic Doppler methodology as part of another South Florida Ecosystem Program project. Ordinary least squares regression techniques were employed to develop models for computing load based upon the relation between nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations or loads and instantaneous discharge.
