Intel Puts 4 GHz Processor on Back Burner
Backing away from a promised processor-speed milestone, Intel yesterday said it would not release a 4 GHz version of its Pentium 4 processor for personal computers early next year as had been planned. Intel did not give specific reasons for the decision to redirect engineering staff away from pushing the clock speed of the Pentium 4 higher.

IT Workers' Pay Expected To Rise Up to 15 Percent
Salaries of information technology workers will climb as much as 15 percent in the next three years, significantly driving up the cost of managing IT infrastructure for large enterprises, according to a report. The Stamford, Connecticut-based Meta Group said in its annual IT Staffing and Compensation Guide that salaries are set to rise between 10 and 15 percent through 2007.

Stocks Up for Day But Close Down for the Week
Stocks posted measured gains today to close out the week on Wall Street, after a strong retail sales report and reassuring comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan about the impact of oil prices on the U.S. economy. The Dow gained 38.93 points, or 0.39 percent, to finish the week at 9,933.38. The Nasdaq climbed 8.48 points, or 0.45 percent.

Greenspan Says Oil Prices Not Problem for Economy
This year's surge in energy prices is likely to have far less of an impact on the economy than the oil shocks of the 1970s, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said today. Greenspan predicted that the global economy will adjust to the recent surge in prices, which has seen oil topping US$50 per barrel, by boosting energy exploration and production and by increasing fuel efficiency.

Samsung Electronics' Q3 Profit Rises, But Growth Slows
Samsung Electronics, the world's largest manufacturer of computer memory chips, said today third-quarter net income rose 46.2 percent on rising demand for flash-memory chips. Net income rose to 2.68 trillion won (US$2.34 billion) from 1.83 billion won (US$1.60 million) on the year prior, the company said in a statement.

Sprint said today it will cut up to 700 jobs, write down the value of its traditional phone network and spend less money marketing standalone long-distance service. The company said it will announce the size of its asset writedown October 19, when it posts third-quarter results.

A leading wireless networking industry group is warning vendors not to push ahead too fast on the next generation of Wi-Fi technology, a faster version that will enable a host of new features. The Wi-Fi Alliance said it would not certify features based on the 802.11n standards being developed by the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) until the IEEE's standards are complete.
