Chairman Christopher Cox Praises Life of President Ronald Reagan
Following the death of President Ronald Reagan, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and House Republican Policy Committee Christopher Cox (R-CA) issued the following statement:
"President Reagan, more than any other statesman of the second half of the 20th century, understood the overarching issues of his time. After decades devoted to studying, writing, and speaking on political philosophy and the great issues of the day, he was brilliant in translating his thoughts into action. He showed that ideas matter.
"Thanks to Ronald Reagan, literally hundreds of millions of people throughout Eurasia and in our own hemisphere live in freedom today. When he took office, the world was on the brink of collision between the West and the Soviet Empire; today, the Russian Federation is one of the G-8 and has a 13% flat tax. The economic prosperity America enjoys today is the legacy of President Reagan's policies of low marginal tax rates and unstinting support for markets and entrepreneurship. These ideas have taken hold not only in our own country, but increasingly, across the globe.
"Much of my own life and career bears his imprint. It was because of him that I first entered government service, as his legal counsel in the White House. He gave me the opportunity to run for Congress in 1988. I would not be in the congressional leadership today without his inspiration and support. Thanks to Ronald Reagan, I met my wife, Rebecca, who served on his White House senior staff as Director of Public Liaison.
"Like so many Americans who were inspired to public service and civic involvement due to the sense of unlimited possibility that first Governor Reagan, and then President Reagan always communicated, I can say that he changed not only my country but my life for the better.
"He is the quintessential American. He made it fashionable to express our love of country. Now, we can unabashedly express our love for him, and especially for his wife and our nation's First Lady, Nancy. Mrs. Reagan and the President's entire family are in our family's prayers."
