Republican Freedom Calendar Highlights 150 Years of Advancing Civil Rights
WASHINGTON (August 3, 2004)—House Policy Chairman Christopher Cox (R-CA) today released the 2005 Republican Freedom Calendar, documenting 150 years of accomplishments by the ‘Party of Lincoln’ in advancing the civil rights and liberties of women and minorities.
“From ending slavery to ensuring that women have the right to vote, no other group in the United States has done more to promote the civil rights of the oppressed than the Republican party,” Chairman Cox said. “The Republican party was specifically organized to combat efforts by the Democratic party to promote and extend slavery. History has too often neglected Republican efforts to expand the blessings of liberty to all Americans.”
The calendar includes events ranging from Senate approval of the Republican-sponsored 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees due process and equal protection of the law to all citizens(June 8, 1866), to the appointment Dr. Condoleezza Rice as the first woman and second African-American to serve as U.S. National Security Advisor (January 22, 2001).
Among its responsibilities, the House Policy Committee, created pursuant to a recommendation of the Joint Committee on the Organization of Congress in 1946, helps formulate party policy within Congress and educates members and the public about such policy.
