Lab's Discovery Center to Extend Hours to Saturdays

In order to better serve the community and visitors, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Discovery Center will extend its hours to include Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new hours will be effective July 10 and will be in addition to the current operating hours of Monday through Friday, 1 to 4 p.m.

The Discovery Center is a window into the Laboratory, offering a look at its past, present and future. A history tunnel welcomes visitors with both the sights and sounds of scientific achievements over the past five decades.

The Center is divided into three distinct zones, representing the major areas of the Lab’s focus: Safety, Reliability and Performance of the U. S. Nuclear Stockpile; Homeland Security and the War on Terrorism; and Science and Technology in the National Interest. A unique video viewing area is available inside a small replica of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) target chamber.

Everyone is welcome at the Discovery Center, located on Greenville Road, at East Gate Drive in Livermore. No badging is necessary. Contact Linda Lucchetti, Discovery Center coordinator, at (925) 422-5815 for further information, or check out the website at http://www.llnl.gov/llnl/06news/Community/visitor.html

In addition, a two-hour community tour of the Laboratory is offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Groups and individuals interested must apply two weeks in advance and be over the age of 18. Non-U.S. citizens must apply 60 days in advance. To register for a tour, please call (925) 424-6575 or register on-line at http://www.llnl.gov/PAO
