Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is located off Vasco Road,
near Interstate-580, in Livermore, California, about 48 miles east of San
Francisco.
It is an easy drive from anywhere in the Bay Area, and convenient to
San Francisco International, San Jose, and Oakland Airports.
The Lab is one square mile in size, with a workforce of more than
8,000 people.
Because much of LLNL’s mission involves national security,
entry is strictly regulated. Visitors must make prior arrangements and
pick up a badge at the Westgate
Badge Office in order to gain admittance to the Laboratory. Visitors
and the news media should be aware of LLNL’s policies
on photography and its rules for bringing restricted
and controlled items onto the site.
The public is invited to tour the Discovery
Center, located
just outside the Laboratory’s gates off Greenville Road; pre-arranged tours
of the Laboratory are also available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Call (925) 424-6575 for more
information.
(Note: Greenville Road north of the Laboratory, between
National Drive and Marathon Drive, will be closed by the City of Livermore
for about six months beginning in October 2004 for street widening construction.
To visit the Discovery Center during this time, use the Vasco Road exit off
of I-580 and go east on Patterson Pass Road to get to Greenville, turn south
on Greenville, turn right at Lupin Way at the Laboratory's east entrance, and
turn left into the Visitors Center parking lot, before the guard gate. Updates
on the construction are available on the city’s Engineering
Road Work Website.)
