Quantum Universe Web Site Launched | ||

Washington, D.C.-- Members of the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel to the
Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, meeting in Washington,
D.C. today (September 24), announced the launch of the Quantum Universe Web site.
Along with HEPAP's recently published Quantum Universe report, the new site
describes the quest to explain the universe in terms of quantum physics, which
governs the behavior of the microscopic, subatomic world.
In response to a charge from DOE's Office of Science and NSF to provide "a
clear picture of the connected, complementary experimental approaches to the
truly exciting scientific questions of our time," the Web site presents nine
fundamental questions about the universe. Answering them, say the Web site and
the report, will lead to "a revolution in particle physics and a quantum leap
in our understanding of the mystery and beauty of the universe."

From Lewis-Burke Associates Senate Appropriations Committee Marks Up NSF
For NSF, the Senate Appropriations Committee is recommending a total budget of $5.74 billion – a 3% increase over the FY 2004 level. The Senate’s recommendation is equal to the President’s request and counters the House recommendation which had sought to cut the NSF request by almost $300 million to a level of $5.47 billion.

From the Chicago Sun-Times, September 22, 2004 Panel will try to win billion-dollar project by Howard Wolinsky Gov. Blagojevich on Tuesday announced he had named a high-level task force of government, business, labor and research university leaders to bring a $1 billion new project to Argonne National Laboratory that could add hundreds of permanent jobs and thousands of construction jobs. Illinois and Michigan are competing for the Rare Isotope Accelerator project that will study fundamental science but is expected to yield commercial applications in medicine, energy production and national security. "It is critical that the public and private sectors in Illinois work together to support Argonne as the location for this important new facility," Blagojevich said.
He asked Jack Lavin, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, to lead a public-private task force with Argonne director Hermann Grunder and University of Chicago President Don Randel.
