Revised: 12/3/2003 Enhancement of NIDDK-Supported Center Grant ProgramsThe NIDDK, in concert with the National Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Advisory Council (NDDKAC), is exploring approaches to the enhancement of NIDDK-supported Research Centers programs. The overarching goal is to maximize the potential of Centers as research resources that are uniquely well-poised to support innovative activities. Through discussions at the June and September 2003 NDDKAC meetings, principles for guidance and enhancements to the Centers programs have been developed (Enhancement of NIDDK-Supported Center Grant Programs: Principles). The four areas of focus are: 1) cores; 2) pilot and feasibility studies; 3) translational/clinical research; and 4) interactions with research training and career development programs. The aim is to ensure that the key components of Center grants (e.g., cores, and pilot and feasibility studies) function as innovative, dynamic components of the Centers programs, responsive to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. The principles will be integrated into a "strategic vision" for each of the NIDDK Centers programs, which will be reflected in the guidelines for these programs as well as in future Requests for Applications (RFAs).
