picture of dinosaur skeleton and sunIf you’re looking for past weather information, you’ve found the right place. This is a roundup of NOAA Web sites that contain archived weather information. The NOAA Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C., is the world’s largest reservoir of archived climate and weather data. Official weather records date back to 1895. You can obtain certified weather information for a court case, building project or other purpose.

If you want to order specific weather and climate information from the NOAA Climatic Data Center, please call (828) 271-4800 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT. Follow the phone prompts—selection two on the automated phone directory—for ordering the data. You can also e-mail your request to NCDC.Info@noaa.gov. You can also fax or mail your request. Please note that the data is free and in the public domain. However, there is a charge for most services. Pre-payment is required, however, the use of credit cards is acceptable and recommended. Click here for more ordering and pricing information.

If you’re looking for more recent weather data and local weather/climate summaries (the previous day or week), it may be available at the NOAA National Weather Service. See the links on a city's forecast page to find the most recent information—Past Weather, Local Climatology, Precip./Temp. Summary or Yesterday’s weather. That information is preliminary and for guidance only. The NOAA Climatic Data Center also posts unedited daily updates from weather stations across the USA.
(Editor's Note: NOAA uses the word "climatology" to refer to past weather.)
