The National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program provides early stage funds to small businesses to conduct research and development, and to prototype exemplary innovative technologies with strong market potential.  NSF SBIR Projects cover a broad range of topics in advanced materials and manufacturing, biotechnology, electronics and information technology.  Below we have listed examples of the topics in which we are sponsoring work:

The NSF SBIR Program is presenting a unique investment opportunity by introducing you to pre-selected, high technology emerging businesses in our portfolio that have each secured nearly $1million dollars to develop and advance their early-stage, cutting edge research. These Phase II Grantees have successfully advanced through two highly competitive selection rounds of assessment involving two rigorous technical peer reviews as well as one comprehensive commercial review. Only one in thirteen applicants typically reach this level of funding from us.

We welcome inquiries from Venture Capital Groups, Angel Investors and Strategic Corporate Partners. To participate, please send us an email at SBIRmatch@nsf.govwith the following information about your organization:

Once we receive your e-mail, a Program Manager will contact you with information on our Phase II Grantees and Projects that may best fit your investment profile. Our Program Managers will also make the initial introduction between you and the companies advancing the technologies of interest to you.  Our Program Managers are drawn from within the high technology research and business communities. They are savvy in technology management and have extensive familiarity with the active investment community and thus will be able to identify relevant Grantees and Projects.

The NSF SBIR Program has established the following criteria for investors and / or corporations to qualify for this connection to small businesses in our portfolio:

• The organization must have a genuine interest and applicable experience as a qualified investor in high technology businesses
• The organization must have an investment focus in one of the four NSF technology areas: electronics, biotechnology, information technology, advanced materials and manufacturing
• The organization agrees to provide access to annual reports, current and past customers, strategic partners and/or portfolio companies as needed and as appropriate for performing due diligence on investors

* NSF SBIR Phase II Grantees *

 We will introduce you to potential investors and / or to strategic corporate partners if you meet the following criteria:

• You have completed NSF SBIR project milestones and NSF reporting requirements on a timely basis
• You have a proven commercialization track record for non-federally funded projects as well as federally funded projects (if established company) 
• You have a demonstrated non-SBIR revenue growth over time (if established company)  
• You have identified key management roles within the company and are assembling a team to take the company forward
• You have a business plan appropriate for submission to investors
• You have a definitive plan to protect intellectual property critical to the technology
• You provide consent to NSF SBIR Program Managers to provide references to qualified investors and corporations

REMEMBER, IT CAN TAKE MORE THAN A YEAR TO SECURE INVESTMENT FUNDS OR A STRATEGIC PARTNER, SO SIGN UP EARLY.
