Damage Assessments

Contaminants biologists in Region 3 restore habitats and resources degraded by pollution using a process called Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA). The goals of NRDA are to restore the habitats and resources to the condition they would have been had the polluters not released hazardous substances, and to compensate the public for the loss of their use or enjoyment of natural resources. The polluters are required to pay for these activities under federal laws and some state laws.

Contaminants biologists are working on several dozen NRDA cases around Region 3. Several of the larger cases involve contaminated rivers which drain into the Great Lakes:

Fox River/Green Bay, Wisconsin

Grand Calumet River, Indiana

Kalamazoo River, Michigan

Saginaw River and Bay, Michigan

•  Ashtabula River and Harbor, Ohio
