Frog Movies

You can make movies of the virtual frog. Hidden-surface removal and MPEG compression are performed after a user-request--there are no pre-stored movies. The MPEG compression software is adapted from the MPEG-1 Video Software Encoder, Version 1.3, from the University of California at Berkeley.

There are roughly 24,000 possible movies, four for each possible organ combination. When you are in the dissection kit, click on the movie projector icon. Then click on one of the red or green arrows that are outlined in red to begin the process of generating a movie. The straight white line indicates the axis that the frog will rotate around. The arrow indicates the direction of rotation.

The "Quality" radio boxes control the quality of the movie. A trade-off between movie quality and movie size is involved. The "best" setting results in the best quality, but the largest movies.

Movies are 176x176, no matter what the image size setting is. There are 70 frames in a movie. The "default" Quality setting results in movies from 70 Kb to 170 Kb in length. "best" results in movies from 580 Kb to 810 Kb in length.

After clicking on an icon, 10-40 seconds will pass while the movie is generated and compressed. When the movie is ready, an icon of the frog and the number of Kb in the movie will appear above the movie icon bar. Click on the icon to bring over the movie and view it. You will need a viewer such as mpeg_play. For using mpeg_play under Unix, you should have the following line in .mailcap:

video/mpeg; mpeg_play -loop -quiet %s
