Executive Interactive Competencies

Overview:
Management/leadership is a complex set of behaviors involving both interpersonal behavior and administrative/technical responsibilities. Leadership in interpersonal behavior consists of such competencies as communicating, motivating, resolving conflict, and giving responsibility. Increases in the variety of available responses to management situations lead to a greater likelihood of being successful. This workshop adds to the leaders' repertoire of interpersonal behavior skills. The course utilizes the Benchmarks peer, self, subordinate, and boss review of the participants' competencies. This assessment forms the basis for confirming areas of strength and identifying areas for action in order to strengthen management/leadership behavior. This workshop uses the principles of behavior modeling, rather than a focus on attitudes and assumptions. Social behavior is learned through intuition, practice, and reinforcement. These processes will form the basis for this workshop. The difference between amateurs and professionals is frequently that professionals have talent, they practice, and they use performance checklists. This workshop uses competencies checklists as guidelines for the practice of interpersonal leadership behavior. This gives the participants a self-assessment tool to determine what is happening in their interpersonal transactions and what they need to do next.

Objectives: Upon
completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- The course is designed to develop increased skills in being more straightforward, putting people at ease, being resourceful, building relationships, increasing flexibility, being compassionate and sensitive, decisiveness, increasing self-awareness, and confronting problem employees. The workshop does this by emphasizing setting a developmental climate in joint problem solving. Since leadership opportunities differ in substance, there will be no so-called right way provided as a model/school solution. Instead, each participant is expected to build on existing interpersonal skills by practicing the communication skills inherent in this workshop.
- This course provides participants with tools to empower employees. Tools for delegating, decisionmaking, and increasing the executive repertoire of skills for creating an empowered workforce are key elements of this course.
Teaching
Format : The elements we use to target this development are the communication foundations of active listening, probing, and giving feedback. The methodology used involves selected case studies provided by peers, role playing, leadership modeling checklists, video feedback, and discussions with your peers. The information on participants' Benchmarks and Myers-Briggs will be integrated with the learnings from this class. This will all be synthesized during an individual session with the participant's faculty facilitator. This course format has been successfully used with top managers from the World Bank and other Federal and State agencies before being tailored to the Federal Executive Institute.
