Laboratory Animal Care and Use

Institute of Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR) - an organization that makes available scientific and technical information on laboratory animals and other biological research resources for the animal care and use community. Site contains current projects, publications, and links to scientific and technical information.

ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals- 1996 National Research Council report that promotes humane care of animals used in biomedical and behavioral research and teaching.

Alternatives to Animal Testing on the Web - site provides news, information, discussion, and resources from the field of alternatives to animal testing. Site is being developed by the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at Johns Hopkins University in collaboration with the Altweb Project Team.

Model Organisms for Biomedical Research - NIH - this site provides information on initiatives, guidelines, publications, meetings, and major resources on both mammalian and non-mammalian research models.

Association For Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) - a voluntary accreditation organization that works with institutions and researchers to ensure the highest standards of animal care and use. Their web site provides a web directory of online resources that includes links to fact sheets, regulations and guidelines, advocacy sites, news links, and veterinary care organizations.

Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) - at the NIH. Web site provides guidance, news flashes, policies and laws, and useful links.

Animal Welfare Information Center - provides information for improved animal care and use in research, teaching, and testing. Web site includes databases, workshops, related links, online publications, and a newsletter.

Public Health Service Policy-on the humane care and use of laboratory animals (2000).

National Association for Biomedical Research- this site addresses reasons for using animals in research and testing, as well as regulations concerning their use.

Foundation for Biomedical Research- Promotes public understanding of the human use of animals in research.

The Moral Status of Animals- a University of San Diego website with links to other pages dealing with "animals in research" ethics.

Guidelines for Ethical Conduct in the Care and Use of Animals- developed by the American Psychological Association Committee on Animal Research and Ethics (CARE).

The Principles of Human Experimental Technique- a book by W.M.S. Russel and R.L. Burch, originally published in 1959, introduces the concepts of the three R's: replacement, reduction and refinement.

Ethics and Alternatives- Ethical issues in the use of animals in research at the University of Minnesota.

Alternatives to Animal Testing- a bibliography of alternatives to the use of live vertebrates in biomedical research and testing, compiled by the National Institute of Medicine.
