Single-Celled Algae

Caption:

Magnified approximately 1,700 times with a scanning electron microscope, a group of single-celled algae (euglenophytes) show their ability to change within a second or two. The change is thought to be caused primarily by one of the cell's cytoskeletal components called microtubules. The cells are quick-frozen before being photographed to capture their varied morphology.
