Polymer Matrix Performance
Caption:
The focus of research by Dr. Jon Kellar, faculty investigator at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, is a multiscale (molecular-nanometer-micrometer) investigation of the interphase and its relationship to polymer matrix composite performance. The necessary fiber optic accessory was developed by this research group and is used to measure polymer curing and chemical reactions. The research will enable the design of improved composite materials.
Dr. Kellar has received support from the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program through NSF grants OSR 94-52894 and EPS 97-20642. His most recent NSF research award is titled “A Multi-Scale Approach for Understanding the Role of the Interphase in Polymer Matrix Composites” (99-00383).
