Hexagonal Nanotips
Caption:
This scanning electron microscope image shows the sharpness and the hexagonal structure of these ZnO nanotips. The image was prepared as part of National Science Foundation research grant CCR 01-03096, “Feasibility Studies on ZnO Nanostructures and their Device Applications,” an exploratory research in the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Initiative Program. The goals of this project were (a) to grow ZnO-based nanoscale structures, including nanotips and nanotip arrays, nanowires, and quantum dots; and (b) to investigate the broad applications of these ZnO nanostructures in UV optoelectronics, biosensors, and advanced communications. The ZnO materials are grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD).
