FIRST Program - Gardening Project

Caption:

Students participating in the FIRST (Female Involvement in Real Science and Technology) Program work with their teacher on a gardening project at Fruitvale Elementary School in Oakland, CA.

______________________
The FIRST Program was established by the Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, with funds from a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant (HRD 95-55807). The program provided an informal setting for girls to engage in hands-on science at elementary and middle schools in the Oakland Unified School District. The heart of FIRST was its weekly/biweekly after-school science clubs, where teachers and girls established close working relationships as they planned and worked on a variety of science activities. The Chabot center supported FIRST science clubs in seven Oakland schools from 1996 to 2000. Grant funds for the program ended in June of 2000, although several schools continued to host FIRST clubs for a while. The program is no longer in existence today.
