Mission and Vision

The INEEL stands out as a unique national and international resource. From its vantage at the confluence of basic science and applied engineering, the lab and its more than 8,000 scientists, engineers and support personnel build on the potential and promise of the theoretical for the benefit of the real world.

Our vision is to be a multi-purpose national laboratory that delivers science and engineering solutions to the world's environmental, energy, and security challenges.

The INEEL is a multi-program laboratory that supports the DOE's missions and business lines of environmental quality, energy resources, science and technology, and national security.

The mission of the INEEL is to:

  • Deliver science-based, engineered solutions to the challenges of DOE's missions areas, other federal agencies, and industrial clients.
  • Complete environmental cleanup responsibly and cost-effectively using innovative science and engineering capabilities.
  • Provide leadership and support to optimize the value of EM investments and strategic partnerships throughout the DOE complex.
  • Enhance scientific and technical talent, facilities, and equipment to best serve national and regional interests.
To achieve our mission we must initiate activities that will revitalize the Laboratory. The following are critical outcomes necessary to reach this end:
  • Maintain operational excellence.
  • Achieve cleanup milestones within cost, scope, and schedule.
  • Develop and apply scientifically based cleanup strategies that reduce uncertainty through an increase in R&D capabilities.
  • Revitalize the science and engineering base and facilities ensuring excellence in technical areas required by the INEEL's mission roles.
  • Position INEEL as a leader by providing systems, infrastructure, behavior, and vision resulting in mission accomplishment and preeminent national laboratory performance.
