EPA is announcing 19 new facilities, including Brookhaven Lab, in the National Environmental Performance Track Program. Performance Track rewards facilities that voluntarily exceed regulatory requirements, implement systems for improving environmental management, work with their communities, and set three-year goals for improvements in environmental performance.

As part of its Pollution Prevention Program, Brookhaven recently invested in a machine used for numerous biology experiments at the Lab - a microwave peptide synthesizer. This new machine will reduce hazardous waste produced in making peptides by more than 97 percent.

This summer, scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will take to the skies above Western Pennsylvania for one month to sample the air for aerosol pollutants and evaluate their effects on Earth’s climate.
