Need Industry Data Now? |
While the e-Outlook is under development, you may find the following resources helpful:
- The Trade Development home page is a portal to Web resources of our industry offices. The industry Web sites offer sector-specific trade statistics, background documents, current trade updates, links to further industry information, and staff contacts by industry specialty.
- The home page of the Office of Trade and Economic Analysis carries the latest data on foreign trade and domestic production. Long-time users of the Outlook will recognize the Trends Tables (click on "U.S. Industry Sector Data") covering hundreds of industries, sorted by NAICS or SIC code. The site's many data reports include state-level export numbers and an industry review.
Progress Updates |

- The Outlook databases are being shifted from NAICS 1997 to NAICS 2002 listings. Click here for details on how NAICS 1997 and 2002 differ.
- A design and logo have been chosen for the beta Outlook. The design files are being tested and tweaked.
- The Department of Commerce's renewed emphasis on manufacturing industries, and the reorganization of Trade Development into Manufacturing and Services, may bring a new focus and new resources to the U.S. Industry & Trade Outlook.
- Over the past year, processes and lessons developing from our work on the online Outlook have been profiled and discussed in conferences and meetings of industry groups, librarians and archivists, and information technology specialists. If you've seen any of these presentations and have suggestions or thoughts bearing on the Outlook beta, feel free to

- The 2001 Annual Survey of Manufactures will be the next big database uploaded to the beta Outlook. This database from the Bureau of the Census includes 2001 numbers on labor, employment, and industry shipments.
- Trade Development's Industry Offices are developing and refining content for the beta Outlook. Here is an updated list of general industry areas for which the beta Outlook will have extended text content:
- Computers & Peripheral Equipment (NAICS 3341-3342 series)
- Construction (23 series)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (62 series), with possibly some aspects of Direct Life, Health, and Medical Insurance Carriers (NAICS 52411)
- Software & Internet Technologies (5112, 5141-5142, 5415)
- Welding and Soldering Equipment Manufacturing (333992)
- Wineries (31213)
- several industries relevant to environmental technologies, such as Sewage Treatment Facilities (22132) and Administration of Air and Water Resource and Solid Waste Management Programs (92411)
- Motor Vehicle Manufacturing (3361 series)
- various industries related to automotive parts manufacturing (3345, 3359, 3363, et al.)
- subsectors of Electrical Equipment Manufacturing (3353) related to power distribution and the delivery of energy.
- The Government Printing Office's Department of Typesetting and Design is developing the new look and feel of the beta website. Thus far we've been working with a functional, bare-bones prototype; the new design will be more intuitive and attractive and will include such crucial beta features as enhanced search capability and a user survey form.
- The Outlook Writers' Guidelines have been posted on the International Trade Administration's intranet as a central reference and forum for Outlook contributors.

The Beta Outlook |
The first step toward the Outlook's new format will be to develop a beta or test version. As currently projected, this will include basic trade and production statistics for nearly the entire catalog of industries organized under the North American Industry Classification System (click here for more information on NAICS), plus expanded content for an initial handful of industries.
Outlook customers and other interested parties who have volunteered to test the beta version will have a chance to use and critique it, and we will then proceed to develop the full-featured Outlook drawing on their input. If you would like to be on this notification/beta list, please
We hope to phase in additional batches of expanded information for groups of industries until the Web Outlook covers at least as many industry sectors as its print predecessor did (the 2000 edition covered 54 major sectors). More industries or additional features will be added as inspiration, available resources, and user requests prompt.
Planned e-Outlook Features |
The Web Outlook will offer expanded and frequently updated information on the featured industries, including some or all of the following:
- Statistical definitions of industries in terms of NAICS (2002) and SIC classifications.
- A discussion of economic conditions and indicators, including graphs and tables tracking industry trends from federal government statistics.
- An analysis of foreign markets and international competition.
- One- and five-year forecasts for real output, prices, employment, productivity, and international trade.
- Discussion and useful links regarding such issues as global trends, demographic change, e-commerce, trade promotion events, research & development, regulation, industry structure, technology, trade agreements and conflicts, U.S. export statistics by state markets, and news of trade shows and events.
- A linked reference list of sources for further information.
