Following is the text of a letter from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, expressing to governments and people around the world the city's appreciation for their assistance and support:

September 2002:

Dear friends:

On September 11, 2001, a horrible act was directed against women and men of virtually every ethnicity and religious belief. The destruction of the World Trade Center killed approximately 2,800 people, including citizens of 91 nations. The attack took place in New York City, but every corner of the globe was affected.

Since that terrible day, the people and governments of many nations, including your own, have expressed outrage at this despicable act, supported the global campaign against terrorism, and contributed to New York's recovery. On this somber anniversary, I want to convey the grateful appreciation of the people of New York for your assistance and your expressions of support. The worldwide solidarity shown our city has been a source of great comfort and strength to all New Yorkers -- particularly to the families of the firefighters, police officers and emergency service workers who fell saving the lives of others that day.

Although we will never forget the tremendous loss that we suffered, New York is a stronger city today than it was a year ago: determined to rebuild and resolved to preserve our precious freedom. Your steadfast friendship is an enduring reminder that the world shares our determination to create a future free of fear.
