Scatterometer Images are created from backscatter measurements made by the SeaWinds microwave scatterometer, which is flown on NASA's QuikSCAT satellite. The scatterometer operates by emiting microwave signals at different look-angles towards the earth and measuring the reflected (or scattered) signal. The returned signals are combined using an enhancement algorithm developed at Brigham Young University to create daily backscatter (sigma-0) measurements of the polar regions, sampled on a 2.225 km grid. |
