Description

The Summer Institute on Aging Research offers new researchers intensive exposure to issues and challenges in research on aging. New researchers are defined as: (1) those who have received the M.D., Ph.D., or other doctoral level degree; (2) those who are at the beginning stages of a research career; and (3) those who demonstrate a capacity or potential for highly productive independent research. The doctoral degree may be in the biological, clinical, behavioral, or social sciences.

The program includes lectures, seminars, and small group discussions in research design relative to aging, including issues especially relevant to aging of ethnic and racial minorities. Lectures include topics in research on aging, such as the biology of aging; genetics and Alzheimer’s disease; and health, behavior, and aging. Discussion sessions focus on methodological approaches and interventions. The program also includes consultation on the development of research interests and advice on preparing and submitting research grant applications to NIA.

Eligibility

Applications are accepted from emerging researchers, including those who may have had limited involvement in research on aging. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, noncitizen national, or lawfully admitted for permanent residence. Forty participants are selected based on:

  • Previous experience and training
  • Affiliation with a research facility
  • Letters of recommendation (sent with application)
  • A brief statement of objective for attending the Summer Institute
  • Research proposal abstract including significance of the problem, approach, and innovation

Financial Support

Travel expenses are reimbursed, and lodging and meals are provided by the sponsors.

Deadline

Applications and letters of recommendation must be received by March 1, 2004. Applicants are notified regarding acceptance within 60 days.

Attachments

Attach the following to the application form:

  • Typed statement of 150 words or less describing the objectives in attending the Summer Institute.
  • Letters of recommendation from two persons who are familiar with your professional interests and scholastic achievements. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure letters of recommendation are received.
  • Research proposal abstract describing research hypothesis or questions, significance of research, and proposed methodology to include a plan for analysis (one page; set the title in bold).
  • Copy of a recent resumé or curriculum vitae.

Incomplete Applications

The Summer Institute does not accept incomplete applications.
