The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Space Science will release Announcement of Opportunity (AO) NNH04ZSS003O for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Measurement Investigations on or about June 18, 2004. Notices of Intent to propose are requested by July 19, 2004, and proposals will be due on or about September 15, 2004.

A Preproposal Conference for this AO will be held in the Washington, DC, area on or about July 7, 2004. Details of this event will be posted at http://centauri.larc.nasa.gov/lro/ no later than June 30, 2004. NASA research funds may not be used to attend this event.

The LRO will be the first mission in NASA's Robotic Lunar Exploration Program and is planned for launch in October 2008. The LRO is intended to provide those measurements necessary and sufficient to characterize future robotic and human lunar landing sites and to identify potential lunar resources, with emphasis on applied science/engineering assessments. Specifically solicited will be hardware investigations that provide experiments to be carried on a lunar-orbiting spacecraft that will be provided and launched by NASA. The prime mission lifetime is expected to be about one Earth year. Participation in this program is open to all categories of organizations, foreign and domestic, including industry, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, NASA centers, and other Government agencies. Upon its release, this solicitation will be available via the World Wide Web site: http://research.hq.nasa.gov/code_s/open.cfm .
