Through the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section, the U.S. government implements the following academic and professional exchange programs in Georgia:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

HIGH SCHOOL LINKAGE PROGRAM provides support for exchanges of high school students and teachers between American and Georgian schools. Contact the U.S. Embassy for more information.

FUTURE LEADERS EXCHANGE (FLEX) FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS is a US government-sponsored program for secondary school students from the 12 republics of the former Soviet Union (Eurasia). The program provides scholarship funding for students to travel to the United States, attend a US high school for a full academic year, and live with a US host family. FREEDOM SUPPORT ACT UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM (FSAU) provides fellowships to first-, second - and third-year undergraduate students from former Soviet Union republics. This program supports one year of non-degree undergraduate study in the United States in various fields. Contact IREX Georgia for more information, tel: 29 19 05.

EDMUND S. MUSKIE AND FREEDOM SUPPORT ACT GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM selects outstanding citizens of the New Independent States (NIS) to receive scholarships for master's level study and professional development in the United States in various fields. Fellowships are awarded to young and mid-career individuals. The program is designed to foster democratization and the transition to market economies in the NIS through intensive academic and professional training. PARTNERS IN EDUCATION PROGRAM (PIE) brings groups of approximately eight teachers and administrators from selected regions of the NIS to school districts and universities in the United States. The program includes a reciprocal exchange that brings US teachers to the schools of the participating NIS teachers for approximately two weeks. AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING PROGRAM (TEA) is a national awards and exchange program that identifies and rewards the best teachers of Georgia. Contact ACCELS for more information, tel: 29 21 06.

JUNIOR FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (JFDP) is a non-degree, professional development program intended to provide opportunities for university faculty with great potential as scholars and instructors to: develop new courses; cultivate teaching skills; expand the information base in their fields of study, and become a vehicle for on-going contact and exchange between home and host institutions. FULBRIGHT PROGRAM FOR GEORGIAN AND U.S. SCHOLARS allows Georgian scholars who possess a Ph.D. to carry out 5-10 month research or lecturing projects in the United States. The Fulbright Program also enables U.S. scholars and graduate students to carry out lecturing and research in Georgia. Georgian universities that are interested in hosting U.S. Fulbright Scholars should contact the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section for more information.

FSA CONTEMPORARY ISSUES FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (CI) - CIF is a merit-based, open competition that selects government officials, NGO leaders and other professionals who are engaged in the political, economic, social, and educational transformation of Georgia. All contemporary issues fellows conduct research to advance the transition to democracy, free markets, and the building of a civil society in the NIS. THE HUBERT H. HUMPHREY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM brings accomplished professionals from Georgia to the United States at the midpoint in their careers for a year of non-degree graduate study and related professional experience. Contact the U.S. Embassy for more information.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS PROGRAM offers 3-5 week practical training opportunities in the United States for Georgians. Community Connections consists of two programs: one for business entrepreneurs who must speak English, and one for groups of professionals, determined by theme, who will have a translator in the United States.
