About the Oral Health Database

The oral health database is a reference tool which brings together a variety of health-related materials and educational resources that fall outside the scope of more technical, research-based collections. It has a strong patient education focus and highlights materials such as fact sheets, brochures, videocassettes, newsletter articles, catalogs, and other educational resources for patients and professionals. The database is sponsored by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, one of the National Institutes of Health.

The oral health database focuses mainly on information targeted to special care in oral health. The term "special care" describes the oral health management of persons with genetic or systemic disorders that affect oral health, whose medical treatments cause oral problems, or whose mental or physical disabilities complicate oral hygiene or treatment. The database is updated regularly to provide the most current and reliable information.

The oral health database is one of 12 separate information subfiles that comprise the Combined Health Information Database (CHID). CHID is produced by a consortium of Federal Health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, and covers a broad range of health topics from AIDS to weight control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question:
Why doesn't the database have any records on my topic?

Answer:
It is possible that a search may not find any records for the topic you request. This might happen for several reasons:

  • You may be searching on words outside the scope of this database or you may be using words that are different from those used in this database.

  • The words you used may be misspelled.

  • Your search may be too specific. You do not need to use every line on the search form. Each line adds another restriction to the search.

Question:
Is the database case sensitive?

Answer:
No, the database does not recognize the difference between upper and lower case letters.

Question:
My search results gave me too many records. How can I narrow my search?

Answer:
Use the detailed search form to narrow your search. At the top of the form you can restrict your search by year of publication, language, and format. You can also restrict the fields used for your search. Using carefully constructed search strategies will also help to restrict your search. See the examples provided in Performing a Detailed Search.

Question:
Why don't all the fields show up for each document?

Answer:
Fields that do not show up are empty. The most common empty field is the availability field. Articles taken from readily available journals do not contain availability information. In most cases, these journals can be found at your local library.

Question:

How can I get the full text of articles, book chapters, and other materials abstracted in CHID?

Answer:
CHID is a bibliographic database, which means that it contains references or citations to these materials. It does not contain the articles themselves, or the full text of any materials. Most database records, however, do include availability information for the items described, so you can order the items from their sources or find them at libraries.

Question:
How do I know what words to use?

Answer:
If you think the database should have information on your topic but you are not finding any records, you may be using a key word that is different from the one the database uses. Try to think of another way to phrase the concept you're looking for. Some common key words used by this database are:

If you're looking for information about: Use this term:
Chewing Tobacco Smokeless Tobacco
Spit Saliva
Dry Mouth Xerostomia
