Stories and Pictures - What the program is like
from first-hand experiences

Below are links to the logs and articles by some of the participants in the Teacher at Sea program. The logs describe their personal experiences and the science conducted while aboard the ship.

Kirk Beckendorf a middle school teacher from Bend, Oregon and Kevin McMahon a high school teacher from Brooklyn, New York sailed aboard NOAA ship RONALD BROWN and participated in the New England Air Quality study from July 1-August 1, 2004. They worked with scientists and wrote daily logs. Visit http://www.ogp.noaa.gov/neaqs to learn all about their adventure!

Kathy Virdin, an elementary school teacher from Ringgold, Georgia, was aboard NOAA ship RAINIER through August 1 while scientists were conducting a Hydrographic Survey. Be sure to check our her daily logs!

Middle school teacher, Sena Norton, from Clackamas, Oregon and Leyf Peirce from Chapel Hill, North Carolina studied Hydrographic Surveying aboard NOAA ship RAINIER from July 6 to July 16, 2004. Norton and Peirce worked with scientists and also wrote daily logs.

Rhonda Feher a middle school teacher in Kayenta, Arizona and Josefina Hinojosa a teacher from Colonia Villa Sonora worked on the NAME (North American Monsoon Experiment) project from July 1st -August 15. Visit http://www.ogp.noaa.gov/name to learn all about their adventure!

Seventh & Eighth grade teacher Jillian Worssam from Flagstaff, Arizona was aboard NOAA ship MILLER FREEMAN helping with the Midwater Assessment Conservation Engineering/Bering Project through August 3, 2004. Keep up with Jillian by reading all about her experiences aboard the MILLER FREEMAN.

The NOAA Teacher at Sea Program and the National Current Observation Program (NCOP) sponsored Curtis Watkins, math and science teacher from Lathrop High School in Fairbanks, Alaska. Curtis was onboard NOAA Ship RAINIER during the NCOP 2004 research project in Alaska. Read all about his adventure at NOAA's National Ocean Service page!

Biology teacher, Geoff Goodenow from Lewisburg High School in Lewisburg, PA sailed aboard the 224-ft. NOAA research ship Oscar Elton Sette May 2-25 from Honolulu, Hawaii, to work with scientists conducting swordfish assessment surveys using longline gear in waters west of the Island of Hawaii. Dr. Laura Brezinsky, a resident of Hilo who teaches human biology and botany at Hawaii Community College, sailed aboard the 215-ft. NOAA fisheries research ship Miller Freeman April 8-22 to work with scientists on a Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (FOCI) cruise in the waters of Alaska. Susan Fountain, science teacher from Altadena Middle School in Phoenix, AZ, was on NOAA Ship Nancy Foster from 2/10 - 2/17. Read her logs and see her photos. Altadena Middle School "tracked" her adventure on their Web site. (http://www.kyrene.org/schools/altadena/events/s/fountain.htm)

Two teachers, Debra Brice from San Diego, California, and Viviana Zamorano from Arica, Chile, boarded the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) Research Vessel Roger Revelle in Ecuador on November 10, 2003.
