NCER periodically establishes both STAR and non-STAR (Congressional
line item) research centers. STAR research centers are competed to achieve
a long-term research goal, since research centers create the following
opportunities for scientific advancement:
- provide for multidisciplinary interactions in a wide range of
scientific areas - informing state-of-the-art research programs
for a specific purpose,
- support a coordinated program of research with the ultimate
goal of
facilitating and accelerating translation of basic science knowledge
into clinical applications or intervention strategies,
- develop fully coordinated programs that incorporate exposure
assessment and health effects research with development and validation
of risk management and health prevention strategies,
- establish a national network that fosters communication, innovation,
and research excellence,
- improve study designs, resulting from intra-Center, multi-disciplinary
integration and cross-disciplinary work,
- ability to pursue "higher-risk" efforts in methods
development, validation, and pilot studies, providing a greater
potential for innovation, and
- longer term continuity for (i.e., for five years) allows long-term
planning and research implementation.
