Purpose:

EPA’s National Center for Environmental Research Science to Achieve Results Program (STAR) and EPA’s National Center for Environmental Economics (NCEE) will hold a workshop on Valuation of Ecological Benefits: Improving the Science Behind Policy Decisions in October 2004.

This two day workshop will include six sessions on topics ranging from coastal water quality valuation to conservation and urban growth to wildlife preservation. Many of the top researchers in the field of environmental economics will be in attendance, as this is a great opportunity to both highlight their own work and learn about related research.

The workshop features research presentations by STAR grantees, researchers from and sponsored by NCEE, and outside researchers. The first day will begin with presentations on ecological valuation activities at EPA; and Ben Grumbles has been invited to provide opening remarks. Geoffrey Heal will give a keynote address in the afternoon. The workshops in this series typically attract up to 200 attendees including EPA staff, other federal and state agency staff, NGO and industry representatives, academics, students, and the trade press.

The Symposium will consist of a series of sessions during which university scientists will present a summary of their research activities. It is anticipated that several EPA scientists will also speak about their research. Possible agenda topic areas include Exposure Assessment, Biomarkers, Susceptibility and Vulnerability, and Chemical Mixtures. The Symposium will be open to all EPA staff, scientists from other federal agencies, and the public who are interested in this research.
