Performance Analysis of Next-Generation LADAR for Manufacturing, Construction, and Mobility
NISTIR (NISTIR 7117) -The NIST Construction Metrology and Automation Group (CMAG), in cooperation with the NIST Intelligent Systems Division (ISD), is developing performance metrics and researching issues related to the design and development of a "Next Generation LADAR" sensor that will enable general automation in structured and unstructured environments. This report reviews the basic physics and implementation of various LADAR technologies, describes the problems associated with available "off-the-shelf" LADAR systems, summarizes State-of-the-Art work underway around the world, and elaborates on general directions that advanced research in this area of sensor design will take in the coming years and its likely impact on autonomous vehicle mobility and on construction automation.

Triangular Meshing and Volume Determination
NISTIR 7142 (NISTIR 7142) -Parametric studies are reported for investigating the feasibility and accuracy of calculating volumes from LADAR scans of artifacts. The TIN (=Triangulated Irregular Network) technique was employed to construct surfaces on which the volume calculation was based. The artifact used was a plywood box of known size and volume. Scans were taken of a tight fitting background screen, with and without the box placed against it. The volume of the box was then recovered as the difference between respective cut or, alternatively, fill volumes. A procedure for determining cut and fill volumes is described. The representation of point clouds by triangulated surfaces offers several algorithmic options as well as choices of parameters. The accuracy of volume calculations was examined for several alternative algorithmic options and parameter settings.

Directory of Federal Government Certification and Related Programs
NIST Special Publication (SP 739 98 ED) - December 01, 1998This directory is the third edition of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) directory of federal government procurement and regulatory conformity assessment of programs which may affect product and services in the marketplace. Prior editions include: NBS SP 714, "Federal Government Certification Programs for Products and Services," published in April 1986: and NBS SP-739, "Directory of Federal Government Certification Programs," published in April 1998. Since the last edition, additional federal programs have been identified and changes have been made in previously listed entries to reflect organizational or programmatic changes. The scope of this directory has also been expanded to include conformity assessment and other types of federal programs which impact on the marketplace. We have not attempted to include programs operated by the U.S. government to accredit or assess laboratories unless they are in an integral part of a product or service regulatory or procurement program. Laboratory accreditation programs are included in a separate publication, NIST SP 808 "Directory of Federal Government Laboratory Accreditation/Designation Programs."
