Any individuals or facilities exploring the latest advances in actuator technology which employ Smart Materials

Expertise Provided:
We focus on developing advanced actuator systems based on the materials research that is burgeoning now. It has been a long held reality that powered mechanical systems (e.g.- robotics, mechatronics, etc) are forced to utilize actuator (motor) systems that has poor weight to strength ratio, poor energy efficiency and are generally cumbersome. By infusing this stagnant device market with advanced motor technology, the impact is limitless. Any system, which currently uses motors to perform motion for output, can be replaced. In addition, new potentials can be seen by CyBotic Technologies, Inc. for many as yet unexplored application areas.

Our company is actively funded by an NIH/SBIR grant to create and study the proteome of vaccinia to identify immunogenic antigens that would help to design rational therapeutic and prophylactic vaccines and diagnostics in case of bioterrorist attacks on our military troops and citizens. To test our leading immunogenic candidates in cell-based assays we need to obtain at least 8 human blood samples: 4 from never-vaccinated naive controls, and 4 from recently-vaccinated subjects (both pre- and post-vaccination). With the recent innoculation of thousands of enlisted men and women in the US, we believe that a cooperative effort between our company and a key academic or military medical doctor/investigator who has access to properly stored human blood samples will be a mutually beneficial research effort. Specifically, I would like to meet a medical investigator who I could talk with about collaborating on this project that is germane to Homeland Security/Biodefense and to the health and safety of military personnel and citizens world-wide.

Looking for a research institute or laboratory capable of conducting research to validate the efficacy of a herbal preparation in the treatment of cancer and other immune related diseases.

Expertise Provided:
Our company has a herbal preparation which has been researched and the result published in a peer reviewed journal, " African Journal of Biotechnology". The abstract is reproduced below:

"Jubi Formula is a herbal preparation made from three medicinal herbs . It has been reported to have been successfully used in the treatment of anaemia in humans. A study was therefore carried out to determine the effect of the preparation on packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations in anaemic rabbits. The PCV and Hb concentrations of healthy rabbits infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei were monitored for 49 days. T. b. brucei produced a significant reduction in PCV and Hb concentrations in all infected rabbits when compared with the controls (p<0.05). These hematological parameters were restored to normal levels in the anaemic rabbits by the herbal preparation. The anaemic rabbits not treated with the herbal preparation presented with a progressive decline in their PCV and Hb concentrations and majority of them died before the end of the study. Healthy rabbits that received daily doses of the herbal preparation showed gradual elevation in PCV and Hb concentrations which were maintained within normal range. Jubi Formula can restore the PCV and Hb concentrations in anaemic conditions and is a potential substitute for blood transfusion. However, further studies are needed to investigate the potentials of the herbal preparation in reversing anaemia."

Key words: Anaemia, PCV, rabbits, haemoglobin, herbal preparation.

This product has been used in the traditional system to treat different types of cancer patients. We now want to collaborate with a research institute or laboratory to ascertain the relevance of the product for the treatment of cancer.

We have developed the HALO (Hematopoietic/Hemotoxicity Assays via Luminescence Output) Platform as a service and in kit form. A new kit is being developed so that it can be used for "in process quality control" of hematopoietic stem cell transplants into patients. I am looking for collaborating transplant centers who would be willing to supply us with frozen samples of mobilized peripheral blood, bone marrow and cord blood to be tested "blind" in order to validate the hypothesis that HALO could be used as a predictor of engraftment and multilineage reconstitution. I am looking for at least 20 samples of each tissue. The HALO results would then have to be compared with the clinical outcome ( whether engraftment took place, whether multilineage reconstitution occured etc) at the end of the study.

STTR partners have successfully worked with JPL to transfer robotics technology to the surgical theatre; sensors technologies to support cancer screening, spore detection, and patient monitor; communications technology for EMV and in-the-field triage; and scientific research into technologies for vision and mobility impaired patients. These technologies, some of which are on the market, in clinical trial or recently published will also be used by NASA in its manned and robotic missions. By partnering with JPL, small businesses can increase their likelihood of success both in the STTR process and in the marketplace and JPL can meet its goals for research and innovative technology transfer.

I am looking for a medical/biological research organization with pre-eminent qualifications to participate as a partner on a Phase I SBIR project....I am working on a technological approach that proposes the use of a special process to selectively destroy or deactivate various harmful/ toxic/ pathogenic agents or cell abnormalities without undue harm to the subject/ organ/ tissue or other biological material under treatment. Whereas, antibiotics, antivirals, chemotherapy drugs and the like generally have specificity towards a particular cell structure or metabolic function, the proposed therapeutic process instead relies on the sensitivity to treatment of generic structures present in the harmful agents. Specifically, by realizing that higher life forms (plants, animals, fungi and humans) differ from many of the infectious organisms, toxic agents and disease conditions due to the make-up of their cell wall structure, the basis for a new discovery for treatment of bacteria, viruses, and other diseases, infections, contaminants, etc. has been established.

Computor science and chemical or mechanical engineering. Hands on experience in instrument and methods development.

An engineer with interest in developing a small business.

Expertise Provided:
I am involved in the development of analytical instrumentation and methods for the separation and analysis of complex natural product mixtures. Several research manuscripts are in progress including a paper on a more mathematical approach to the thermodynamics of temperature program GC. This theoretical approach has been applied to published experimental data. This theoretical approach should also be applicable to Liquid Chromatography with some modifications. Preliminary patent applications have been prepared. Even further expansion of the underlying theory continues.

I am also interested in developing applications of my patented molecular separator technology as described in a research paper entitled "The Variable Molecular Separator [ Sep.Sci. and Tech Vol 26, No.4, 1991] and related patents. The characteristics and potential applications of this separator are quite different from those of the conventional supersonic jet separator , a fact that apparently is not generally appreciated. The Variable Molecular Separator should also be a very useful tool to study the special properties of gas flow in the transition region between viscous and free molecular flow. This is an area of research that has been neglected for a long time and has particular implications for analytical instrumentation. A short Summary of potential applications has been prepared. A particularily useful area of development is direct inlet mass spectrometry and rapid vacuum exhaust chromatography. The development of the underlying theory continues.

A combined research proposal for the two separate projects in outline form has been prepared and could be made available along with the appropriate background material as described above.

This new baking company is the outgrowth of the Vision's Sown Nutritional Anthropology Research Project that is seeking to discover whether ancient grains and indigenous medicinal botanicals incorporated into its experimental 'functional' and organic bakery products can lower cholesterol when incorporated into an overall heart smart diet. Our lead products have been lab tested and are able to make the FDA qualified health claim for nuts (almonds) and heart health. Additionally, the baked goods are low in saturated fat and sodium, high in fiber, contain essential mono & polyunsaturated fats predominantly and are cholesterol and trans fatty acid free. We are looking to have a diverse group of participants eat these baked goods exclusively over a period of time to monitor whether or not this unique dietary strategy can be successfully incorporated into a cholesterol lowering health plan.
