What other online help or GCG FAQs are out there?
So far we've found the following:
- bionet.software.gcg --
a newsgroup devoted to the GCG package. If it's not already set,
you'll need to set your news server in Netsacpe by going to
Options -> Mail preferences -> Servers. Enter 'news.nih.gov'
for the name of the News (NNTP) server.
- Caltech's
GCG Beginners FAQ. This is specific for VMS systems, but if you
are somewhat familiar with VMS and Unix you may be able to translate
the commands appropriately.
- Unofficial
Guide to GCG Software from the University of Minnesota. Has basic
information such as the Blosum and PAM250 comparison tables, pros
and cons of Fasta searches. Those familiar with VMS and Unix may also
find the detailed info on GCG routines helpful.
- The
GCG FAQ from the HGMP Resource Center, MRC, UK. This FAQ
is designed for a Unix system, so the commands described should
be similar to those on the helix systems.
- Molecular
Biology Computing, a course from NYU. Has chapters on Finding
Sequences, Sequence Similarity Searching, Multiple Alignments,
Structure-Function Relationships, Restriction Mapping/Primer
Design, Phylogenetic Analysis.
