Registration

Full library privileges are extended to primary clients. These privileges include borrowing library materials, database searching, interlibrary loan, photocopying, and desktop access to databases. In order to borrow library materials, primary clients must register for a library card by presenting a valid HHS building pass and a completed application form.

Limited library privileges are extended to all others. These include in-house use of library materials, photocopying, and in-house access to databases.

Locating Materials

Books, journals, newsletters, indexes, and technical reports are listed in the online catalog. All items may be searched by author (when applicable), title, subject, and keyword. Each record will reflect the holdings for each library. The address for Web access to the online catalog is

  • Books are arranged by call number in both the reference and regular collections. The call number for each item in the reference collection will begin with a "REF" indicator.
  • Journals are arranged alphabetically by title. Journals for the current year are displayed on slanted shelves. Issues for previous years are shelved in the journal stacks.
  • Newsletters are shelved alphabetically by title in a separate section.
  • PHS Numbered Reports are shelved in the technical reports section by accession number.
  • Technical Reports in Microfiche are filed in cabinets in the back of the library.

Reference

Inquiries are accepted by mail, telephone, email, and in-person. The reference staff provides extensive research support for primary clients.

Materials owned by the Health Services Research Library may be borrowed by:

Literature Searches

Mediated: Reference librarians perform searches upon request on a wide array of databases covering all subject categories. If you are one of the library's primary clients, please click here to request a search.

End-User: Clients may perform their own searches on a variety of databases such as MEDLINE, PsychInfo, etc.

Interlibrary Loan

Materials not owned by the Health Services Research Library will be borrowed from other institutions for primary clients only. The library will lend circulating materials to outside organizations via the OCLC interlibrary loan system, DOCLINE, or if the request is accompanied by an Interlibrary Loan Form. At the present time there is no charge for interlibrary loan.

Library tours may be arranged by calling 301-443-2673.

Equipment

The library maintains workstations for end-user searching and accessing the online catalog. The library also provides access to copiers for the photo duplication of materials, and maintains reader/printers for the duplication of materials in microform. Audio/visual equipment is available to accommodate both audio tapes and VHS video cassettes.

Photocopy Policy

Clients may photocopy library materials free of charge provided the following guidelines are met:

One copy allowed for research purposes only.
Library staff may interrupt at any time.
HHS staff have priority over non-HHS clients.

Some documents require Adobe Acrobat® Reader.
