Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced today that the president has made the following nominations:

          Army Lt. Gen. David D. McKiernan for reappointment to the rank of lieutenant general and assignment as deputy commanding general/chief of staff, U. S. Army Forces Command, Fort McPherson, Ga.  McKiernan is currently serving as the commanding general, Third United States Army/commander, U. S. Army Forces Central Command/Coalition Forces Land Component Command, Fort McPherson, Ga.

Army Maj. Gen. R. Steven Whitcomb for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and assignment as commanding general, Third United States Army/commander, U. S. Army Forces Central Command, Fort McPherson, Ga.  Whitcomb is currently serving as the chief of staff, U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.
