Located in the northwest corner of South Carolina, the Fourth District includes Greenville, Spartanburg, and Union counties as well as the tip of Laurens County. The District boasts both cutting-edge manufacturing and the serene southern landscape of the Piedmont region.

Successful manufacturing and warehousing ventures have transformed Greenville County, the state's most populous, from its textile past of 30 years ago. Greenville now claims to have more engineers per capita than any other county in the nation.

Similar patterns of economic growth have helped Spartanburg to the northeast. More than 90 international firms have located in the city. The best-known example is BMW, which began production in 1994 at its first North American assembly plant in Spartanburg, now the sole producer of the Z4 Roadster. Agriculture also plays an important role in the Spartanburg area; its sprawling orchards yield one of the biggest peach crops in the South.
