Tribal Waste Management - Working With Tribes

  • Municipal Solid Waste Management in Indian Country (EPA HQ) This EPA Office of Solid Waste web site provides information to help tribes address MSW management needs. Topics include funding, laws and regulation , information resources, tribal success stories, educational resources, upcoming conferences, and links.
  • Municipal Solid Waste Landfills in Indian Country: Draft Guidance This draft guidance document describes a process by which municipal solid waste landfill (MSWLF) owners and operators in Indian Country can request design and operating flexibility that is available to landfill owners and operators in states with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved MSWLF permitting programs.
  • Source Book of Environmental Resources for Indian Tribes: This document, known as the "Environmental Management Resources for Indian Tribes" and an accompanying Fact Sheet are designed to assist EPA and Tribal environmental managers develop programs by providing information on resources and projects throughout the United States.   • EPA's Rembursement Program for Emergency Response Measures: Federally recognized Indian Tribes are eligible for reimbursement under this for up to $25,000, per incident, for costs incurred in performing temporary emergency response measures. Incidents involving releases, or threatened releases, of hazardous substances, releases from transportation accidents, illegally dumped wastes, tire fires and contamination from illegal drug labs are covered under this program. To be reimbursed the Tribe must properly document the costs and show that the Tribe was not responsible for the release.
