Job Level Category Definitions
In an effort to present the Volpe Center positions that are currently available in an organized manner, we have established job level categories into which all available positions have been grouped.
Below are brief definitions of the job level categories that are being used on the web site. The number enclosed in parentheses next to each job level heading represents the current number of positions contained in the Find a Job database.
Student Employment (2)
A candidate for a Student Employment position must be a student who has been accepted for enrollment, or who is enrolled, as a degree seeking student in an accredited 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school. If the student is enrolled, they must be taking at least a half-time academic course load in the appropriate field of study.
Entry Level (3)
A candidate for an Entry Level position would typically have recently completed either a Bachelors or Masters degree, or have up to two years of post Bachelors degree professional work experience directly related to the position being filled.

Grade Range: GS 05 - 09
Entry Level - IT / Computer (0)
A candidate for an Entry level position would typically have recently completed either a Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or have up to two year of post Bachelors degree professional work experience directly related to the position being filled.
Salary Range: $ 34,427 - $ 63,071
Grade Range: GS 05 - 09
Mid-Level (7)
A candidate for a Mid-level position would typically have a Bachelors, Masters, and/or Doctorate degree in their chosen field, and/or one to four years of post degree professional work experience directly related to the position being filled.
Salary Range: $ 51,635 - $ 80,449
Grade Range: GS 11 - 12
Mid-Level IT / Computer (0)
A candidate for a Mid-Level IT / Computer position would typically have a Bachelors, Masters, and/or Doctorate degree in the IT / Computer Science, and/or one to four years of post degree professional work experience directly related to the position being filled.
Salary Range: $ 54,287 - $ 81,144
Grade Range: GS 11 - 12
Senior Level (1)
A candidate for a Senior level position would typically have a Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate degree, and/or three or more years of post-degree professional work experience directly related to the position being filled.
Salary Range: $ 73,593 - $ 113,056
Grade Range: GS 13 - 14
National Expert Level (0)
A candidate for a National Expert level position typically has a stature and level of technical expertise to take a lead role in initiating, developing, and shaping Volpe Center programs and initiatives addressing critical national transportation issues. The National Experts work closely with senior Volpe Center management in identifying emerging national concerns and exploring new opportunities for the Center to participate in their resolutions.
Salary Range: $ 102,295 - $ 132,987
Grade Range: GS 15
Executive/Managerial (1)
These are the positions at the Center that lead both organizations and people. A candidate for a managerial position at the lower level would typically have experience comparable to the senior (or national expert) level described above, which included experience in managing and leading projects and teams. Senior executive positions build on previous management experience and require significant business management, human resources and organizational leadership responsibilities.
