Welcome to the home page of the Disability and Health Team We are part of the new National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.  Our focus is promoting the health of people who are living with disabilities. This Web site is dedicated to describing that work and sharing public health information resources. 

The CDC, Disability and Health Team Activities include:

  • Assessing and monitoring disability prevalence

  • Assessing the health status and quality of life for people with disabilities

  • Describing risk factors and costs associated with secondary conditions and poor health

  • Developing health promotion interventions to reduce secondary conditions and evaluate intervention effectiveness and costs

  • Offering training to health professionals interested in the field of disability and public health

  • Supporting conferences to facilitate and stimulate dialogue; disseminate and exchange information; establish research and policy priorities; and outline and undertake next steps

Research Questions and Answers

Disability and Health supports several efforts to answer important emerging and urgent public health questions in the field of disability.  Those questions include:

  What is the most recent way to view and assess human functioning, disability and health?

  How many people in the United States have a disability?

  What is the health status of people with disabilities compared with people without disabilities?

  Which public health interventions hold promise for reducing secondary conditions, promoting health, and reducing disparities among children and adults with disabilities?

The National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) promotes the health of babies, children, and adults, and enhances the potential for full, productive living.  Our work includes identifying the causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities, helping children to develop and reach their full potential, and promoting health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities.
