Important Message from the CISE AD

The transition from the old CISE organization to the new is progressing quite smoothly. As you will find on our new web site ( http://cise.nsf.gov ), we have begun to solicit proposals from the CISE community in ways that mirror the structure of our field. In the process, CISE is becoming a more agile Directorate, organized around the discipline and, as a result, better able to respond to new opportunities.

Our new organization has four divisions: the Division of Computing & Communication Foundations (CCF); the Division of Computer and Network Systems (CNS); the Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS); and the Division of Shared Cyberinfrastructure (SCI). Each division is organized into a small number of clusters that are responsible for managing a portfolio of grants and proposal competitions within a broad area of research and education. While individual program directors may be designated as the point of contact for specific sub-disciplines, collaboration will take place within each cluster, across each division, and between divisions and directorates.

We have also identified a number of cross-cutting CISE emphases for FY 2004 that require multidisciplinary collaboration and directorate- and/or NSF-wide involvement. These are Cyber Trust, the Science of Design, Information Integration, and Education and Workforce. Our goal is to create a broad portfolio of awards (individual, group and, in some cases, center) within each of these areas.

In response to feedback we have received from the community, and to assist your understanding of the transition from the old to the new organization, we have prepared a programmatic crosswalk that maps former CISE programs and program solicitations to new ones reflective of our new organization. This should help direct you to the clusters and solicitations most closely aligned with your research and education interests. The crosswalk can be found at http://www.cise.nsf.gov/news/pubs/program_crosswalk.pdf. NSF cross-cutting programs will continue to be managed as they were prior to the reorganization. Information about these programs is available at http://www.nsf.gov/home/crssprgm/.

The reorganization of CISE is an initiative to help us serve you, the community, better. We appreciate the feedback you have provided thus far, and hope to hear from you over the next year as we refine CISE's organization to better meet your needs.

Sincerely,

Peter Freeman
Assistant Director of NSF for CISE
