Nutrition Studies

The Western Human Nutrition Research Center is one of six USDA-funded human nutrition centers in the country. Located on the University of California, Davis, campus, the goal of  the Center is to define nutrition interventions that promote good health. The Center is currently accepting volunteers for the following studies:

MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL PHYSICAL FITNESS LEVELS NEEDED FOR RESTING METABOLIC RATE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to learn how physical fitness and physical activity affect the accuracy of validated prediction equations that are currently being used in clinical practice to calculate resting metabolic rate.  This study requires that you be between 20-40 years of age, not currently taking medications that affect metabolic rate, non-smoking, and pre-menopausal, non-pregnant, non-lactating if you are a woman.  Each participant will be given information about his or her % body fat and muscle, fitness and metabolic rate information, and blood work information. The blood work information includes glucose level, total cholesterol level, HDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride level. Only one lab visit is required at Hickey Gym, UC Davis.
The total laboratory time will be ~ 2 hours.

WOMEN WITH ADH
RESEARCH STUDY ON
DIETARY BREAST CANCER PREVENTION

If you have been diagnosed with "Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia" in the last 2 years, you may be eligible for a research study on prevention of breast cancer with nutritional supplements. This study is being conducted by the USDA Western Human Nutrition Research Center and the U.C. Davis Medical Center with funds from the National Cancer Institute.
To find out if you are eligible to participate in this nutrition study,
(530) 752-5177 and press #6.
USDA, UC Davis, and the National Cancer Institute support equal participation of minorities in research and encourage applications from members of under-represented groups.

DHA SUPPLEMENTATION STUDY

Men, 45-65 years old, with high blood triglycerides (fat) are invited to participate in a research study. We hope to learn if supplementing your diet with a fat rich in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) compared to olive oil changes risk factors for cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) disease. You cannot be taking medications to lower triglycerides and we prefer volunteers who normally eat meals containing fish 2 times per week or less.

POST MENOPAUSAL WOMEN NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY

Women who have recently passed menopause are being sought to participate in a three-year nutritional study that will examine the effectiveness of estrogen-like compounds from soy in preventing bone loss associated with osteoporosis. The study is being conducted by researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Western Human Nutrition Research Center at the University of California, Davis. Women enrolled in the study will be randomly assigned to take either a placebo pill or a high- or low-dose soy pill. Each participant will be given information about her own bone density, dietary intake and physiological changes associated with menopause.

WOMEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ENERGY BALANCE RESEARCH

The purpose of this study is to test new ways to measure food intake and energy output in people. We are evaluating the use of inexpensive, simple tools as substitutes for costly laboratory equipment in determining how many calories an individual takes in and expends. If these new tools are shown to be accurate, they could make it easier for nutrition and health studies to be conducted on a more widespread basis. In turn, the more people that can be studied, the more reliable the information gathered. Such information forms the basis of healthy living guidelines that are set by health authorities.
