Tax Practitioners Get an Extra Edge with EFTPS at Trade Shows

Washington  Each summer the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) conducts national Tax Forums for tax professionals around the country. This year, following the six forums in six different cities, the IRS reports that practitioners are expressing more interest in the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System--EFTPS.

EFTPS is a service offered free from two agencies of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the IRS and the Financial Management Service (FMS). The system enables taxpayers and tax professionals to make federal tax payments electronically using EFTPS-OnLine, EFTPS-PC Software, EFTPS-Phone, or EFTPS Batch Provider software for professionals. As a business tool, EFTPS helps tax practitioners increase their efficiency, saving them time and money in processing and recording federal tax payments for their clients.

For all six forums, the agencies report that more than 1,000 tax professionals registered to provide EFTPS to more than 100,000 taxpayers. The Tax Forums were attended by nearly 15,000 tax professionals in Atlantic City, Ft. Lauderdale, St. Louis, Atlanta, New Orleans and Reno. The IRS invites all registered Electronic Return Originators and Enrolled Agents to the Tax Forums where they gain new and updated information about filing and paying federal taxes.

"We're very pleased with the incredible reception EFTPS is having among tax professionals. They need a fast, easy and accurate way to manage tax payments for their clients, and EFTPS is just the tool for that," according to Jerry Songy, IRS Director, Taxpayer Education and Communication. "Using EFTPS Batch Provider software, tax professionals can make up to 750 payments in one transmission for both business and individual clients. That cuts down significantly on the time involved in paying taxes for their clients."

“EFTPS is truly a citizen-centric government service that delivers convenience, speed and accuracy," says Bettsy Lane, FMS Assistant Commissioner for Federal Finance. "We know that taxpayers and tax professionals are looking for ways to more efficiently conduct business with the government, and EFTPS helps them accomplish that."

Taxpayers can enroll in EFTPS by visiting the EFTPS-OnLine Web site at www.eftps.gov, or by calling EFTPS Customer Service at 1-800-555-4477 or 1-800-945-8400.

###

EFTPS was introduced in 1996 and since that time nearly 4 million taxpayers have enrolled in the system to make all their federal tax payments using EFTPS-OnLine, EFTPS-PC Software or EFTPS-Phone. EFTPS enables taxpayers to make tax payments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from home or office; schedule payments up to 120 days in advance (for businesses) or 365 days in advance (for individuals); review the last 120 days of tax payment history online or by calling Customer Service. In addition, taxpayers receive an EFT Acknowledgement Number for every EFTPS transaction for easy record keeping and as proof of the transaction. EFTPS is ideal for all business taxpayers and individual taxpayers that make Form 1040 ES quarterly estimated payments.
