Center Resources

Special Assays, Services, or Tests

Anthropometrics: Standardized techniques for measurements of whole body mass, height, and various skinfold thickness and body circumference

Bioelectrical impedance: Allows for in vivo prediction of total body water, extracellular water and intracellular water

Body composition: Whole density, total body water, whole body muscle mass, intracellular and extracellular body, skinfold and circumference measurements

Computed tomography: Sensitive measurement of regional adipose and lean tissue area; high speed CT/i computed tomography system

Deuterium oxide dilution: Total body measurement using Nicolet 360 Avatar spectrophotometer

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA): Hologic

24-Hour urinary creatinine excretion: Muscle mass calculated assuming an equivalence of 18.5 kg of muscle per gram of urinary creatinine; percentage of muscle estimated using the calculated muscle mass and body mass

Muscle analysis: Mounting, freezing, and analysis of human muscle tissue obtained by biopsy technique; sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis silver staining; histochemistry; immunohistochemistry; assessment of total protein; Western blot analysis of specific proteins; activities of a limited number of metabolic enzymes

Sample processing core: Expertise and processing of all human samples collected for approved GCRC projects

Whole body plethysmography: Whole body mass and volume measurements used to estimate whole body density; relative proportions of body fat and lean body mass calculated using population-specific equations that relate body density to body fat and lean tissue mass using the Bod Pod

Major Areas of Investigation

Allergy and Immunology: Food allergens.

Dermatology: Intralesional skin test antigens.

Geriatrics: Hormone therapy in debilitated elderly; dietary protein requirements in the elderly; myocellular basis of sarcopenia and reduced muscle function; senescent muscle and exercise training.

Infectious Diseases: Tuberculosis in HIV-negative adults.

Neurology: Parkinson's disease; auditory evoked potentials on depression; Huntington's disease.

Nutrition and Metabolism: Diabetes and obesity; molecular genetics of insulin resistance; translational regulation of lipoprotein lipase; genetics of nephropathy; genetics of non-insulin-dependent diabetes; exercise and high carbohydrate diet; gene expression in obesity; dioxin and insulin resistance.

Oncology: Colon polyps and colon cancer; prostate cancer; breast cancer; multiple myeloma.
