Major Areas of Investigation

Cardiovascular Diseases: Pathophysiology of vasospastic disease; therapy of peripheral vascular disease; prevention of sudden cardiac death in heart failure; screening for familial dilated cardiomyopathy.

Endocrinology: Diabetes Prevention Trial, type 1 diabetes; evaluation of patients with Cushing's disease or pseudo-Cushing's disease; effects of glucocorticoids on TSH secretion; cortisol production rates in chronic illness, infertility, and short stature; effects of estrogens and androgens on bone metabolism; therapy of adrenal insufficiency.

Gastroenterology: Treatment of intravenous immunoglobulin-associated hepatitis C infection with interferon alpha 2b and other agents; ursodeoxycholate-methotrexate for treatment of primary cirrhosis; kinetics of altered lipid metabolism in patients with end-stage liver disease; turnover of glucose protein and urea in the perioperative liver transplant patient.

Metabolism: Hyperlipidemia; cholesterol metabolism; omega-3 fatty acids; alpha-beta-lipoproteinemia; dietary influences on blood lipids and lipoproteins; therapy of hyperlipidemia; lipid response to dietary fat in black women and white women; lipid modulation of erythrocyte membranes in sickle cell anemia; effects of lipids on retinitis pigmentosa; metabolic and genetic studies in Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome.

Neurology: Dopamine sensitivity in Parkinson's disease; role of sex hormones in cognition; attention and executive function on motor freezing in Parkinson's disease; use of deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's disease; functional studies in healthy aging subjects.

Psychiatry: Melatonin and depression; circadian rhythms and melatonin secretion; relationship of work-shift schedule to circadian desynchrony; phase-shifting properties of intravenous melatonin; melatonin-induced prophylactic sleep as a countermeasure for sleep deprivation; hyperkinesia in neuroleptic-naive schizophrenics.

Rheumatology: Hormone abnormalities in fibromyalgia.
