MISSION
The National Wetlands Research Center's (NWRC) Spatial Analysis Branch (SAB) uses state-of-the-art technology to provide natural resource managers with spatial data and computerized analysis techniques necessary to make informed decisions.
CAPABILITIES
Environmental Electronics Engineering
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
GIS-based Ecosystem Assessment and
Modeling
National Spatial Data Infrastructure and
National Biological Information Infrastructure
Photointerpretation and Cartography
ISSUES
Natural resource managers and researchers need spatial data and the technology to analyze that data. The NWRC houses one of the largest geographic data bases related to natural resources in the Southeast. Data bases include status and trends (1956 to mid 90's) of wetland, upland, and seagrass changes along the gulf coast; satellite images of land cover for the Southeast; contaminants for Atlantic and gulf coast estuaries; breeding birds and coastal restoration projects for Louisiana; and hydrology and vegetation for the lower Mississippi Valley. Data are derived from aerial photography and videography, global positioning systems (GPS), satellites, radar, automated data loggers, and ground verification.
