UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 352,000, an increase of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 337,000. The 4-week moving average was 353,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 349,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending Oct. 2, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 2 was 2,845,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,856,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,861,250, a decrease of 5,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,866,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 336,528 in the week ending Oct. 9, an increase of 57,113 from the previous week. There were 368,876 initial claims in the comparable week in 2003.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending Oct.2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,353,221, a decrease of 14,675 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,943,805.

 

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 25.

1,198 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Sept. 25.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,497 in the week ending Oct. 2, an increase of 131 from the prior week. There were 2,235 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 131 from the preceding week.

There were 16,469 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 25, a decrease of 962 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,129, a decrease of 363 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 25 were in Puerto Rico (4.2 percent), Alaska (3.4), New Jersey (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.6), Oregon (2.5), California (2.4), Michigan (2.4), Massachusetts (2.3), Connecticut (2.2), and Washington (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 2 were in California (+4,065), Illinois (+2,021), Texas (+735), Colorado (+503), and Missouri (+381), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-2,625), Georgia (-2,075), Indiana (-1,640), Puerto Rico (-1,352), and New York (-1,247).
