Science and Technology

At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, we are advancing the frontiers of new scientific knowledge and innovative technologies. Our research and development addresses critical challenges in energy, the environment, and national security for the nation.

PNNL's areas of research, from fundamental science to eventual commercial application, fall into seven main areas:

As our scientists, engineers, and technologists make breakthrough discoveries, we look at how this new knowledge can be applied to real-world solutions in these areas. We are committed to moving science out of the laboratory through new applications and products. Some of these resulting technologies are ready to be commercialized and are available for licensing.

Our researchers work together in teams that cross the boundaries of traditional disciplines. We can draw from the diverse expertise within our own organization as well as from throughout Battelle, which operates PNNL and is involved in managing three other national laboratories.

We establish laboratory initiatives to explore innovative ideas and strengthen or create technical capabilities that support Department of Energy missions. Our initiatives target leading-edge fundamental research or novel technologies.

PNNL researchers share their results with their colleagues through journal articles, presenting papers conferences and other types of publications, which are listed in our publications database.
