Wireless Outreach
The Wireless Telecommunications Bureau is committed to advancing the
goals of the Federal Communications Commission. As part of this
commitment, the Bureau seeks to fulfill its mission by implementing
innovative ideas to:
- increase spectrum access,
- create a positive impact on customer service through policymaking,
and
- address Public Safety and Homeland Security issues.
In partnership with individuals, public and private organizations,
and other government agencies, the Bureau seeks to improve the
wireless landscape by fostering programs and providing access
to information for all of its customers. Current outreach initiatives
are:
Enhanced 911 (E911)
Coordination Initiative
Through the Wireless Enhanced 911 Coordination Initiative, the
Federal Communications Commission seeks to bring together relevant
stakeholders to share experiences and devise strategies for
expediting wireless E911 deployment.
Joint Federal
Rural Wireless Outreach Initiative
The Joint Federal Rural Wireless Outreach Initiative is a partnership
between the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and the
USDA's Rural Utilities Service to coordinate activities and
essential information on programs, financial and other assistance
regarding telecommunications opportunities for rural communities.
The objective of this initiative is to encourage greater access
and deployment of wireless services to enhance economic development
throughout rural America. This partnership will harmonize the
respective agencies’ rules and regulations, coordinate
outreach activities, and develop a joint Model Wireless
Broadband Community Project.
Rural Wireless Community
VISION Program
The Rural Wireless Community VISION Program,
which is part of the Joint Federal Rural Wireless Outreach Initiative,
invites any rural community to submit an essay which describes
the community’s vision for wireless connectivity and services
and how the community will benefit from this vision. Communities
are chosen on the basis of their VISION Essay.
The FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and the USDA’s
Rural Utilities Service will send a team to the chosen communities
to provide on-site project assistance. The FCC’s Wireless
Telecommunications Bureau will provide regulatory, engineering,
legal and technical support. The USDA’s Rural Utilities
Service will contribute the financial and telecommunications
expertise of their loan-grant officers and their regional general
field representatives.

Tower
Construction Notification
Tribes and historic preservation officers can ask to be notified
by the FCC when a third party voluntarily provides notification
of plans to erect a tower within a certain area.
2004
Wireless Broadband Forum
This Forum, held on May 19, 2004, examined the economic, regulatory,
and technological factors that impact the deployment of wireless
broadband services. Wireless broadband business, technology,
and regulatory experts shared their knowledge, experiences,
and views on the future of the industry.
2004 Jackson
State University (JSU) Auction Test
The FCC conducted a test of its new state-of-the-art package
bidding auction software from April 13-27, 2004 at a software
testing center at Jackson State University (JSU) in Jackson,
Mississippi.
