KSC-04-S-00194 (06/15/2004) --- With an eye on the future of American spaceflight, NASA is releasing the first pieces of Space Shuttle Columbia debris to the aerospace industry for research. NASA believes permitting access to the debris will allow manufacturers to design and build safer, more efficient and reliable components for future spacecraft. "As part of the reconstruction and the investigation, the folks who were supporting the investigation came in and were taking a lot of notes and responding: 'Hey, there's a lot neat science that can be taken from Columbia not related to the accident.' " In response to the enthusiasm shown by the investigators, NASA asked that companies interested in viewing Columbia contact the Agency.

Open streaming video. KSC-04-S-00031 (02/01/2004) --- It's been a year since the tragic loss of Space Shuttle Columbia and her crew of seven. The Kennedy Space Center family hosted several events to mark the anniversary. KSC's cavernous Vehicle Assembly Building is every Space Shuttle’s last stop on the road to the launch pad. Now, it is also a permanent home to debris from Shuttle Columbia. On January 29, a commemorative plaque was unveiled and a "Columbia room" was dedicated on the 16th floor. The dedication took place in a private ceremony on NASA's first Remembrance Day.

Open streaming video. KSC-04-S-00022 (01/26/2004) --- A highly experienced crew of seven are preparing for STS-114, slated to be the Space Shuttle's return to flight. Five of the crew members already have a combined 12 Shuttle flights behind them. These seasoned veterans are: Commander Eileen Collins, Pilot Jim Kelly, and Mission Specialists Steve Robinson, Andy Thomas and Wendy Lawrence. Mission Specialists Soichi Noguchi and Charlie Camarda will be making their first flights. The crew is training at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. STS-114 will be much more than a routine Space Station mission. The mission will test new flight safety procedures - like Shuttle inspection and repair methods. But the Columbia accident has had a profound effect on more than just the flight plan. [COLLINS] "For me personally, I've restrengthened my ties with my family and with my friends.

Open streaming video. KSC-04-S-00004 (01/08/2004) --- NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover, Spirit, honors the crew of STS-107. Shortly after the rover landed on Mars it revealed a special plaque it brought along bearing the names of Space Shuttle Columbia and her seven crew members. In honor of Columbia and her crew, NASA has named Spirit’s landing site the “Columbia Memorial Station,” a fitting tribute to the Columbia crew, who gave their lives in the spirit of exploration. Spirit sent back a picture of the memorial plaque, mounted on the back of its high gain antenna.

Our top story, Expedition 7 Commander Yuri Malenchenko, Science Officer Ed Lu, and European Space Agency astronaut Pedro Duque are safely back on Earth. Their Soyuz spacecraft landed right on schedule in Kazakhstan October 27. Malenchenko and Lu spent 183 days in command of the International Space Station before handing off to Expedition 8 Commander Mike Foale and Flight Engineer Alexander Kaleri.
