At sea with USS Carl Vinson, Oct. 2, 2002 — An F/A-18C Hornet from the "Mighty Shrikes" of Strike Fighter Squadron Nine Four (VFA-94) is the first aircraft to land on the flight deck of USS Carl Vinson' (CVN 70) since the ship completed a scheduled maintenance up-keep. The Hornet is about to catch the #3 wire, the arresting cable the pilots aim for in a space of deck about 80 feet long. The Hornet is making the trap at about 135 knots. At sea aboard USS Princeton, Sept. 26, 2002 — USS Nimitz (CVN 68) is framed by the National Ensign of USS Princeton (CG 59) as the two ships are underway in the Pacific Ocean. Princeton is part of the Nimitz Battle Group. The carrier is off the California coast undergoing Tailored Ship’s Training Availability (TSTA) operations Two and Three, designed to help integrate the ship and embarked air wing while preparing for future deployments.
